Why most operators choose Toluca
Toluca is where business aviation into Mexico City normally goes. It has the largest selection of FBOs in the country, a 13,780 ft runway, and it is roughly 45 minutes from the Santa Fe business district. It is preferred over MMMX for most business aviation operations because it avoids the slot coordination and airline congestion of the main airport.
The trade-off on race weekend is distance. Toluca is west of the city and the circuit is on the east side, so passengers cross the whole of Mexico City to reach it. Build that into the schedule, particularly on race day, and arrange ground transportation in advance. Parking at Toluca also tightens during major Mexico City events, so confirm whether your aircraft can stay or will need to reposition.
When Mexico City International makes sense
MMMX sits on the east side of the city, close to the circuit, which is its one clear advantage for this event. Against that, slot coordination is required for every operation, slots are restricted during peak hours, the airspace is complex, and international operations require advance permit processing. For an operator who secures the slots and handling early, it can work. It is not an airport to plan around at the last minute.
Performance at altitude
Both airports are among the highest major airports in the world: Toluca at 8,466 ft and Mexico City at 7,316 ft. Long runways help, but density altitude still reduces climb performance and can limit takeoff weight. Run the numbers for your departure with the expected passenger and fuel load, and consider whether a fuel stop makes more sense than a heavy departure.
Charter operators: check your permit first
A Part 135 operator needs a valid AFAC Blanket Permit, with the specific aircraft listed on it, to fly this trip. AFAC no longer issues single-entry charter permits, and a new or modified Blanket Permit can take up to 90 business days. If you do not already hold one, or the aircraft you plan to use is not on it, this is the first thing to resolve before quoting the trip.
